RequirementsDE Rantau Income Requirements Explained (2026): USD 24,000 vs USD 60,000
TL;DR: To qualify for Malaysia’s DE Rantau Nomad Pass you need a stable remote income of at least USD 24,000 a year if you work in a tech or digital role, or at least USD 60,000 a year if you work remotely in any other field. MDEC checks this with payslips, invoices or bank statements, plus a current employment contract or client agreements.
The two income bands
DE Rantau has two thresholds, and the one that applies to you depends on what you do, not where you are from.
- USD 24,000 a year (about USD 2,000 a month) for tech and digital professionals: software developers, UI/UX and graphic designers, data analysts, digital marketers, content creators, IT contractors and similar roles.
- USD 60,000 a year (about USD 5,000 a month) for remote workers in non-digital fields, for example consultants, finance or operations staff and other professionals who work remotely for foreign employers or clients.
This is why you may see both figures quoted online. Neither is wrong; they apply to different applicants.
How MDEC checks your income
MDEC wants to see that your income is real, recent and comes from outside Malaysia. Typical evidence includes:
- Recent payslips or invoices (usually the last 3 months)
- Bank statements showing the matching payments arriving
- A remote employment letter from a foreign employer, or active client contracts
- An updated CV showing your digital or professional background
Common income problems we see
- Freelance income that is lumpy. A few large invoices with gaps between them can look unstable. Showing a 12-month picture and active contracts helps.
- Payments that don’t match invoices. If your invoices say one amount and your bank statement shows another (fees, currency conversion), explain it clearly.
- Role not clearly digital. If your job title is vague, your CV and contracts need to make the tech or digital nature of your work obvious, otherwise the higher USD 60,000 band may be applied.
