DE Rantau Rejected? What to Do Next (and How to Avoid It)

By Anchor Nomad ยท Updated October 2026

TL;DR: Most DE Rantau rejections come from three things: unclear income proof, weak or mismatched remote-work contracts, and missing or poor-quality documents. MDEC fees (about RM1,080) are non-refundable, but you can usually reapply once the problem is fixed. Diagnose the cause first, then strengthen the evidence before resubmitting.

Step 1: Work out why it was rejected

Re-read your rejection notice and compare your file against the requirements. The usual causes are:

  • Income not proven. Payslips, invoices and bank statements don’t line up, or total less than USD 24,000 a year (tech) or USD 60,000 (other roles).
  • Contracts look weak. Expired client agreements, contracts without dates or signatures, or an employment letter that doesn’t confirm remote work from Malaysia.
  • Role unclear. Your CV doesn’t show you are a digital professional, so you are assessed against the higher threshold.
  • Document issues. Passport with under 14 months’ validity, unclear scans, missing insurance or personal bond.

Step 2: Fix the evidence, not just the form

  • Get a fresh employment letter that states your role, salary, start date and that you may work remotely from Malaysia.
  • Replace expired client contracts with current, signed agreements.
  • Add a simple income summary that reconciles invoices to bank deposits, including currency conversion and platform fees.
  • Rewrite your CV so the digital nature of your work is obvious.

Step 3: Reapply with a complete file

Only resubmit when every document is consistent. A second rejection costs another non-refundable fee and more time, so it pays to have someone check the full package first.

How to avoid rejection in the first place

  • Check which income band applies to you before you apply.
  • Make sure names, dates and amounts match across every document.
  • Use clear, colour scans with a white-background passport photo.
  • Confirm your passport has 14+ months of validity.
